Key factors that you should consider when adding light to your aquarium are: size of the aquarium, fish species and other inhabitants, plant life and aesthetics.
Fluorescent lighting is a very efficient way to light your aquarium, it also provide light evenly across the length of the tank. Fluorescent bulbs provide both fresh water and saltwater aquariums with light that will create better photosynthesis.
Marine reef aquariums can sometimes require greater quantities of light to help support the growth of coral species.
Tips:
- Plants require approximately 12 hours per day of light.
- It’s beneficial to turn the room lights on for at least a half hour before turning your aquarium lights on, as sudden changes of light quantity can stress fish out.
- If you feed your fish during the day allow at least 30 minutes before and after feeding
- Using timers is a great idea, not only does it help with your energy costs but fish with consistent lighting patterns respond much better than not.
- If you have a multi bulb canopy, stagger your bulb changes so that the fish can adapt to the light difference.
- Don’t leave the lights on 24 hours a day, fish require dark periods just like us humans do.
- Make sure that your ballast has a drip loop for the electrical wiring.
- Remote ballasts should be in an area where there is plenty of ventilation. Keep this in mind particularly when you have a light that puts of more heat than others.
