Colorful fish aren’t the only thing that makes an attractive aquarium. There are a lot of great ways to decorate a tank. Here are a few key components that you can use to make your aquarium an appealing piece of art.
Driftwood: Used commonly in natural type aquarium settings, it’s an ideal anchor for plants such as Java Moss, bolbitis heudelotii and anubias barteri. Pre-soaking driftwood will help lessen the chance of discoloration. Quite often it is suggested that if you have a fish from the pleco family you should also have some driftwood.
Rocks: To add natural looks to your aquarium think of using rocks. When using rocks try to use only 1 or 2 different types, this will help keep the natural look of your aquarium. When stacking your rocks make sure they are stable and will not collapse.
Gravel: A very common substrate. With planted tanks use gravel with diameters of 2mm – 5mm. Here is a tip; avoid using lightly colored substrate because it will make your fish appear less vibrant in color. Create a depth perspective by sloping the gravel from back to front, create pockets of low and deep areas. Also think about what kinds of plants you have and whether their roots will need deeper areas to network.
Ornaments: Decorating with ornaments can give your aquarium that personal touch. Make sure the ornaments are safe and non-toxic, it is recommended to only use ornaments that are made specifically for an aquarium. Ornaments also provide structures to fish giving them a chance to keep their natural behavior patterns.
Backgrounds: Hide electrical cords and hoses by choosing a colorful background to compliment the rest of the decorations you have already chosen. You can find a variety of great backgrounds in sizes to fit almost any tank application. Make sure your fish and plants look their best by giving it that finishing touch with a background to contrast with.
